I like that you have these bits of humor layered into the story, for a number of reasons the least of which is reading something with such a depressing subject matter would be way more with the depressfest if no one ever cracked a joke. And that would make me sad. And then I would eat a lot of cookies. And then my inflating hips would be angry. It's all a vicious cycle, you see.
Um but secondly, and slightly more seriously, people grieve in weird ways and it's such an awkward situation with Justin thrown in the mix that the humor actually makes everything more realistic, instead of just 'Everyone is miserable and sad all the time,womp womp'
Honestly, I just laughed a lot when she slapped Justin. I'm still laughing. This is possibly a strange reaction. Oh well.

I don't know why I'm just getting around to reading this now but I love it a whole, whole basket of lot. Brilliant, original idea and I love the way you're writing it - hope you keep going with it and apologies if this review is less than coherent as whiskey consumption has been involved.
