„No. No, I’m not accepting that. I’m not accepting that. You should go abroad. Maybe they have different methods in Europe…“ 

„Please just believe what I’m saying,“ Josh interrupted his friend again. „Both doctors said exactly the same. The chances waking up from surgery are nearly zero. And as you can imagine, the last thing I want, is ending up in coma again.“

Helpless tears dropped on Justin’s cheeks. He didn’t know what else to say. 

„T… listen to me. They don’t know how long I already live with that time bomb in my head. And no one can tell how much time I have left. It can be over tomorrow or in ten years. Everything is possible. I have no influence on that. All I can do is taking meds to lower my blood pleasure, eat healthy and do some regular workout to improve my physical condition.“ 

„This is cruel, C. How do you deal with that unbearable uncertainty?“ 

„It’s easier you might believe. Of course I was devastated at the beginning. But I could also get hit by a bus anytime when leave the house. So, where’s the difference?“ 

Justin was too overwhelmed to reply. He needed another moment to sort his mind. 

„How is Eve dealing with it?“ he finally asked. 

Josh took a deep breath.

„It was like a terrible deja vu for her, when the doctors explained why surgery was not an option. She was traumatized. It took a while until she learned to deal with the new circumstances. It broke my heart seeing her this way, crying her eyes out over and over again. But she’s better now. We talked a lot about how we gonna deal with my diagnosis.“

„With which result?“ 

„As soon as Lizzy moves to New York for her studies, we wanna spend as much time together as possible and travel. Eve already talked to Mateo about leaving the firm. I started informing my clients about my retirement. There are just few ongoing projects I need to finish.“

Justin wiped away his tears.

„It makes totally sense. Did you also tell the kids?“ 

„No,“ Josh replied. „We told them about our plans quitting work to travel the world, but didn’t explain why. We don’t want them to worry. They need to focus on their education.“ 

Justin nodded, still processing. Josh made a short pause, before he continued talking. 

„T… the reason I tell you all of this…“ 

He made another break. Justin’s heart accelerated. He already had an idea what would come next. 

„I need you to promise me something,“ Josh said. 

„Promise you what?“

„If this damn thing in my head turns my lights off, I need you to take care for Eve.“ 

Again Justin just stared at him. 

„She’ll need you more than ever before, T.“

„C, there’s no need having this conversation. You know exactly I’d do everything for Eve and your kids, no matter what it is. You are my family.“ 

Josh’s eyes begun swimming. 

„Thank you, man.“ 

„It’s my honor.“ 

Both stood up and hugged each other tightly, trying their best fighting their tears. 

„Hey um… it’s not like it matters but… maybe it does…“ Josh said, as they released each other.

Justin frowned. 

„What are you talking about?“ 

„Well… if you and Eve… I mean… you still love her, it’s obvious… so… if you want…“ 

„Dear god, C…“ Justin made a disgusted face. „Are you giving me your blessing having your wife when you’re dead?“

„Yes.“

„This is super creepy!“

„Um ya… I know… but… well… probably she doesn’t want you anyway,“ Josh teased. 

„Excuse me?! I’m pretty hot for my age!“ Justin talked back. 

„Says who?“ 

„Females, mostly!“

„Then why you’re still single, hm?“ 

„Because I’m picky.“

Josh chuckled. 

„However, I’m relieved we clarified things.“ 

Justin turned serious again. 

„Please promise me taking care for yourself. I don’t wanna lose you.“ 

„I do what I can, T. I promise.“
