Chapter 5-New York, New York

As the plane flew me northward that morning, I couldn't help but be excited. I mean New York couldn't be nearly as boring as Maryland. Absolutely nothing happens in Maryland. In spite of my obvious hatred toward Melody, I couldn't help but look forward with a tiny hint of curiosity; it's been years since I've traveled up there.

New York City had always been my favorite city. It was always alive with excitement, and everything happened in New York City. Anyone who was anyone lived in New York City. It truly was the city that never slept.

The flight didn't take more than a few hours. I stepped off the plane, and anxiously scanned the crowd for any sign of Melody. I couldn't see her. I just took out my phone from my purse, to call her, but I was interrupted by a slight tap on the shoulder.

"Excuse me, are you Brooke O'Neil?" I turned around, and was startled by a tall guy.

"Um yeah..." I told him with a hint full of doubt. Hey I didn't know this guy. He could've been some crazy rapist or something. I'm paranoid, I know. Besides, how the hell did he know my name?

I guess he must've sensed my immediate surprise when he tapped my shoulder, because then he said, "I didn't mean to scare you. But I'm here to take you to Miss Melody's house." Okay. So he wasn't a crazy rapist, shoot me.

"Oh, okay!" I sighed a breath of relief.

He led me across the airport and opened the door to the limo.

"My name's Tony  by the way."

"Nice to meet ya, Tony." I smiled.

            "Same here."

I climbed into the posh limo, and scooted over to give Tony some room.

"So where's Melody?" I asked him, kinda bummed that she didn't want to pick me up. I mean, here I am, her sister-in-law, and she doesn't even bother to pick me up. Bitch.

"She had an errand to run, so she sent me to get you. But she should be there by the time we hit her house." He informed me.

"Oh." I responded, and I looked out the window, taking in all of New York.

You know, it's crazy how weather can be entirely different from one place to another. Was it just last night that it was wild and wet with rain, sploshing everywhere like Noah's Ark was gonna be built in any second? It all seemed like a vague memory now as I peered out the window to find the sun beating down on the streets.

New York was buzzing like a beehive, proudly conscious of the fact that it is one of the coolest places of the country, no of the world. The sidewalks were crowded of all sorts of people; people on bikes, people talking on their phones, kids holding parent's hands, anxiously pulling their parent's wrists,  wanting to get an ice cream. The sight was such a change from the quiet and leisure of Maryland, but I liked it. It was as if I could feel the steady pulse of the city's heart beating with my own.

"I think I'll like it here!" I exclaimed.

"You will, I'm sure of it." Tony smiled.

The limo came to a halt and I looked out the window, and let out a silent "Oh!"

The house, er mansion, was so beautiful. It laid a top a green hill. It was humongous. No wonder Melody didn't want to live by herself. The house was just so big, she must've been lonely.

Tony dragged my suitcases to the mansion. I didn't know how long I was staying. Maybe I'll never go back. Maybe I'll just find a job here in New York. I doubt Melody would mind having me stay for long. I mean JC will be on tour for God knows how long. The house is so big, I doubt she'll even realize I'm here half the time.

I knocked on the door and was immediately greeted by Melody's smile.

"Brooke! You made it! I'm really sorry I couldn't make it but-" she began, but I cut her off.

"It's okay, Melody. It's cool." My eyes looked anxiously around the house around me.

It definitely was beautiful. It was a fifteen bedroom house. Why they would need fifteen bedrooms is beyond me, but damn, those rooms were huge. Melody walked me up the long, winding staircase up to my room. My room was rather plain, all white basically. I would fix it up later. When I would come around to shopping, which would probably be tomorrow, or sometime this weekend. She then showed me the rest of her house.

There kitchen was so big. I don't even think Melody cooks that much, but oh well, their problem, not mine.  They had tennis courts, a swimming pool, and even a home movie theatre. God, Melody is living the life. But it must no be fun when you have all these things but nobody to share it with.

"Brooke... it really means a lot that you came to move in with me." She whispered to me, while we were watching Grey's Anatomy.

"Yeah, uh huh." I know, it wasn't the best response, but damn, Patrick Dempsey is so sexy, it distracts me. That in the fact that I wasn't sure if I like Melody or not.

She kept talking and talking to me all night. And then the next day. And then the day after that. It's like Shut. The. Fuck. Up. It's like she thought I was her best fucking friend. I don't care about her uncle, I don't care about her job, I don't care about her fiancé-

Wait. I do care about him.

But you know what I kinda sunk in after the first weekend?

I'm her fucking sister in law.

How the hell did I get into this situation?

I remember she smiled at me one night, before I went to bed, and said, "Good night, sis."

Sis. As in sister. Every time she uttered that word, I shuttered.  I mean are you fucking kidding me?

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

Fuck.

I should've stayed in Maryland.
