There was an old lady who appeared to be in her 70’s. She was quietly sewing in a corner and appeared to be waiting for someone. Probably her husband. There was also a mother carefully watching her three-year-old boy as he played on the floor. The old lady would look up at them every now and then and smile, reminiscing her own child raising days.

A few seats to the left of the mother, sat a teenage girl who was staring curiously at him. ‘Oh, please not here.’ He prayed. JC looked at his watch and began bouncing his leg up and down. Hospitals creeped him out to no end. A needle was his greatest fear, but the fact that hospitals had them made him nervous. He wanted to leave, and soon! ‘What’s taking so long?’ He asked himself as he continued scanning the room.

His eyes landed on a girl who looked to be in her early 20’s. She appeared to be in distress, with her head bowed and her long, brown hair hanging over her face. Her shoulders shook every few moments. She was most likely crying, but he couldn’t tell.

JC didn’t know what it was, but he found himself wanting to comfort her. He soon found himself seated next to her not knowing how he got there. He might as well try to comfort her. He realized that she didn’t know he was there.

“Um, excuse me ma’am. Are you ok?” he asked gently placing his hand on her shoulder.

The girl froze, obviously not knowing that anyone was there or that anyone would speak to her. She looked up at him. JC noticed her bloodshot eyes and tear stains down the side of her cheeks from crying. JC also noticed her beautiful golden brown eyes, and he couldn’t help but to stare. The girl didn’t answer; she only looked at him with a questionable look on her face.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be over here,” he said, regaining his senses and standing up to leave. He knew he shouldn’t have bothered her. ‘I should be thinking of Justin, not some girl.’ He scolded himself.

As he was preparing to leave, he felt a light touch on his arm. He turned, and the girl mustered a small, weak smile.

“I’m sorry; I’m a bit disoriented right now. Please. You can sit here,” she said, looking into his eyes for the first time. He had the most amazing shade of blue she had ever seen. The girl quickly looked away as she thought of the event that occurred hours before. JC sat down again and looked at her.

“Are you ok?’ he asked again. She shrugged her shoulders not knowing how to reply. After what happened today she wasn’t sure how she felt. She was sad, angry, shocked, all at once. All the emotions were giving her a headache.

“Do you need something for that headache?” JC questioned when he saw her rub her forehead. He was planning on heading down the hall to buy Justin a snack. He might as well be polite and buy a Tylenol for her as well. She shook her head no.

“No thanks. I can handle it. I’m just so confused right now,” she said.

“Why don’t you tell me what happened? Talking always helps sort things out,” he suggested. The girl whose name he had yet to figure out but already seemed to cared so much for stared at him.

“My friend and I were in a car accident. She lost a lot of blood and they don’t know if she’ll survive,” she blurted out before sobbing again. JC was shocked, and after she spoke it was the first time he realized the multiple scratches and Band-Aid on her forehead. He held her and gently rubbed her back. He could only imagine what she was going through.

“Can you tell me exactly what happened, or am I being too nosy?” JC asked when she quieted down. She shook her head and wiped her nose in the tissue she had before beginning.

“Well…”

~Flashback~

“Hey Abs, wanna go get somethin’ to eat?” asked Carolena Gamma, Abby’s best friend. She was 18 and had just started her first year of college, majoring in singing/voice and dance. Carolena had long, dirty blonde hair and dark blue eyes.

“Sure, Carol. Where we goin’?” Abby asked. Abby Darice, a senior in college, had just turned 23. Even thought there was a five-year difference between the two, they were always the best of friends, and shared a dorm.

The two girls grew up together in the same neighborhood, and had separated when Abby went off to college. Now, Carolena was starting college and Abby suggested she could move in with her at the apartment. They also attended the same college with Abby majoring in journalism.

“How about Burger King?”

“Sure. I’m getting tired of microwavable dinners anyway.”

They headed out of the apartment and into the parking lot, towards Abby’s car.

“Ready to go?” Abby asked, as they were buckling up.

“Yeah! I’m starved!” Carolena turned on the radio as they sped off. Their only worry was getting to a nearby restaurant.

~End Flashback~

“…A car heading in the opposite direction lost control and slammed us head on. Carolena had hit her head on the dashboard really hard and was knocked out. Since the car hit the front half of the passenger’s side the most, she was stuck. Something cut her and she bled a lot. The paramedics had to cut her out of the car,” she explained before sobbing again.

It had taken so long for her to get the story out, because she kept breaking down. JC was patient though; he knew she needed to get this out.

“I’m sorry. I’ve just been babbling about my troubles and crying my eyes out to a complete stranger,” the girl told JC.

“It’s okay. I could tell you really needed for someone to listen. By the way my name is JC,” he said smiling and sticking out his hand for her to shake. She smiled at him and took it.

“I’m Abigail, but everybody calls me Abby,” she replied. “And thanks for listening. I really needed that.”

“You’re welcome.” JC could tell she was feeling better now that she had talked to someone. He was glad that he could help. JC noticed her eyes looked brighter, although they still held some despair. He really wanted to see them completely bright.

“So, why are you here, if you don’t mind me asking?” Abby questioned trying to start up conversation.

“My friend broke his leg during dance practice. Guess we’ll have to quit dancing for awhile.” He laughed.

“Yeah. What is it you do?” JC was surprised that she didn’t know who he was, but he decided to not tell her just yet.

“Me and four other guys are in a singing group.”

“Really? Carolena wants to become a singer. Guess she’ll have to go easy on the dancing for awhile as well.”

“That’s cool. What about you?”

“I'm majoring in journalism; I want to be a reporter or writer.”

“I’m sure you’ll make an awesome journalist.”

Abby blushed at JC’s comment. Luckily he didn’t see because at that same moment, two beautiful nurses wheeled out Justin. JC rolled his eyes at the big smile on his friend’s face.

“Hey JC!” he called as he was wheeled over. JC waved.

“That’s your friend?” Abby asked. JC nodded. “He looks really happy.”

“Abby this is my friend Justin, Justin this is Abby,” he introduced.

“Hello.”

“Hi,” They said shaking hands.

“Well, we better get going. Think it would be okay if we visited you and your friend tomorrow?” JC asked.

“Sure,” Abby replied, not really believing he would return.
