Chapter 28

She wrapped her arms around him. “Congratulations, babe,” she said, her voice muffled by his shoulder. Justin had just been nominated for a Grammy Award. She pulled away. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thank you, hun.” He leaned over and kissed her. “Hey, I’m touring with someone this summer.”

“Yeah? Who?”

“Christina Aguilera,” he told her, smiling. “We both had a meeting with Jonny today and thought it was an awesome idea.”

“Oh, babe, that’s awesome!” she smiled. “And you two haven’t seen each other in such a long time.”

“Yeah, it was great to finally see her again.”

“Well, you ready?” Justin asked, squeezing her hand.

She squeezed it back. “Ready as I’ll ever be.” Just as she finished her sentence, the limo driver opened the door and they stepped out of the limousine and onto the Grammy Awards Red Carpet. They walked together, hand-in-hand, down the carpet and through the sea of celebrities when suddenly, Justin was bumped into from behind. Justin and Jen turned to see who it might, and there stood Britney, a wide smile plastered across her face.

“Oh, hey, Justin! I didn’t even know you were there.”

“Hey… Britney,” he replied, uncomfortably.

“You never called me,” she said, tilting her head to the side.

Justin laughed cynically. “Are you kidding me?” Britney stared at him dumbfounded. “Why would you say that all of a sudden? We haven’t spoken in weeks.”

“Well…” she looked around. “I just figured that you might want to hang out sometime, and I’ve been looking forward to a call from you.”

Justin couldn’t help but roll his eyes at her. Was she serious? “I’ll see you around,” he said, and turned to walk away.

“Call me!” she shouted after him, before he disappeared into the crowd.

“Hey, Mom - it’s me! Guess what? I got a job as a full time teacher!”

“Wow, that’s great, honey! When do you start?”

“Not until September.” She couldn’t help but smile, and her mother could hear it in her voice.

“I’m so happy for you, Jen. You’ll make a great teacher.”

“I sure hope so,” she laughed. “I’ve gone through too much training only to find out that I’m a lousy teacher.”

They talked a bit more, and finally hung up when Justin came home.

“Hey, babe, how was the shoot?”

“It went okay.”

“I can’t wait to see how the pictures come out,” she chuckled. “By the way, I got the teaching job.”

“Oh, Jen - I’m so happy for you!” He embraced her in a hug and kissed her. “Congratulations.”
