Chapter Nine

“Jen?”

“What?”

“Are you just about ready?” JC called, glancing down at his watch. He sighed. They were going to be late. He had no idea why it took her so long to get ready!

“I’ll be out in a minute!”

“You said that twenty minutes ago! We can just stay home for all I care!”

“Would you stop being such a pain? Give me one minute!”

Sitting down on the bed, JC groaned and crossed his arms over his chest. He’d planned a nice evening out for him and his wife since his daughter had asked to have another sleep over with Brianna. However, he was beginning to regret his decision. Jen was driving him crazy and the evening was becoming a disaster!

He had just opened his mouth to tell her to get a move on when the bathroom door opened. There she stood, dressed in a gorgeous black dress, her long hair let down and curly. She was beautiful. His mouth remained open and his breath caught in his throat, sending him into a coughing fit.

Hurrying over to her husband, she put her hand on his shoulder gently.

“Are you okay?” He nodded and waved her back, trying to catch his breath. His eyes were watering, but he managed to sort himself out before he stood.

“You look beautiful,” he complimented, his voice hoarse from the coughing spell. She gave him a shy smile and tucked her hair behind her ears. Although she knew how he felt concerning her, hearing a compliment here and there really made her feel good inside.

“Are you all ready to go?” She asked, rolling her eyes when he snorted at the question.

“No, my dear. Are YOU ready to go?” He asked, holding his hand for her. She gave him a sweet smile instead of replying sarcastically and leaned up to kiss his cheek gently. This was going to be a wonderful evening.

Both dinner and dessert had been glorious. The young couples had completely made pigs of themselves and were quite thrilled to get home to change into sweatpants with elastic waists in them. They had snuggled up on the couch together, with his arms around her.

“Tonight was wonderful, Jace. I’m glad we got to go out,” Jen said, looking up at him. She pressed a soft kiss to his chin.

“Well… tonight isn’t over,” he told her with a sly smile. She couldn’t help but laugh.

“There’s something I need to talk to you about before we uhh… adjourn to other activities…” JC felt his heart pounding. Was she was going to tell him that she was ready to give up on trying to have a baby? He really hated when conversations began this way. He always thought the worst!

“Alright,” he told her, giving her a weak smile. He straightened up and reached for her hand, wondering what it was that they needed to talk about.

“I know that ummm… you were worried because of all the stuff that’s happened over the last month or so and because of what we were told by Dr. Monroe… but I…I’m pregnant again,” she told him, letting out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. “I actually called Joey today and asked if Julie could stay over so that I could tell you. I hope you don’t mind but I just… I don’t want her to know until we know that we’re safe, you know?”

JC had not heard a single word after the words “I’m pregnant” had invaded his brain. For a minute, Jen was terrified that this wasn’t what he wanted, that’d he’d agreed to try for a baby thinking that she’d be unable to get pregnant. But when that dorky smile that she’d come to love made its way onto his face, she knew better.

“You… we’re gonna… for real?” He asked, his heart thumping. He couldn’t believe it. He jumped up off the couch and let out a whoop of excitement. It was a good thing that Julie was away! He would have woken her up! He jumped up onto the couch much like a little kid, doing a little ‘victory’ dance.

Jen couldn’t help but laugh at him. He was too cute. She watched as he stopped and dropped down onto the couch.

“Have you told anyone?”

“Of course not! I’d never tell anyone before you.”

“Good. I think we should… keep it to ourselves for now, you know? They always say that if you talk about it before your third month, you jinx it. I don’t want to do that.”

She threw her arms around his neck, pressing her face against him. She was so incredibly happy that he’d taken the news of her second pregnancy well. She just hoped that this one turned out better than the last.
