Chapter Eighteen

“Well you look like crap!” Julie greeted once her father had descended the steps.

“Watch it,” he growled, the sound rumbling within his chest. He felt like crap too! He headed over and dropped down onto the couch beside her, leaning his head over to rest it on her shoulder. “Your dad’s getting old.”

“’Getting’? Don’t you mean ‘Your dad is old’?” She asked with a giggle when he swatted at her thigh.

“You’re not too big to go over my knee, little lady,” he growled once more, though a smile found its way onto his face.

“You’re pretty excited, huh?”

The smile brightened when she asked. He lifted his head up and looked over at her, his blue eyes round.

“You have no idea, Julie. No idea at all. I love you girls of course, and I certainly wouldn’t trade you or Abbi for the world. But there are so many things I’ll get to do with him that I can’t do with the two of you.”

“Like what?”

“Just… guy things, you know?” He asked with a laugh.

“Was Jenny that excited about Abbi?”

“Well, Abbi was different. We didn’t know she was a girl until after Jen had her. But for days, no, weeks afterwards?” He paused to laugh. “She walked around here gloating over the fact that she had her little girl.”

“Do you… think that my mom was that excited about me?” She asked, looking up at him. Although the light conversation had taken a serious turn in a matter of seconds, JC didn’t allow his smile to falter.

“Honestly Julie? I don’t know. Unfortunately, I wasn’t there when she found out, nor was I there when she had you. But you know what?”

“What?”

“She would have had to have been crazy NOT to be excited about you. And furthermore, she’s missing out on knowing a beautiful, sweet, smart, talented young lady,” he told her, leaning down to kiss her nose gently. Giving him a weak smile, Julie pulled her legs up, tucking them under herself as she leaned over to rest her head on his shoulder.

“I love you daddy.”

“I love you too angel. And I love you too. Always,” he promised, reaching over to pat her knee gently.

Letting out a disgusted grunt as her things fell to the floor, she glared over at Brianna as she passed, grumbling angrily as she bent down to begin picking up her books.

“One of these days I’m going to knock that smug little smile right off”“

“Need some help?”

Looking up, Julie’s face turned bright red.

“Umm… I don’t”“

Her protest was lost of deaf ears as he dropped down beside her, gathering her papers up quickly, smiling over at her.

“I’m Joel,” he said, extending his hand to her sweetly.

She slid her hand into his, smiling as he shook it gently before standing and helping her to her feet.

“I didn’t catch your name,” he reminded her, as she’d yet to speak.

“Right! Right, sorry, I’m Julie,” she said with a smile, her face reddening just a little. She had seen him around before, though had never had the courage to speak to him. He was a year older than her, and far cooler than she could ever hope to be!

“Well Julie,” he said as the bell rang. “You be more careful next time, huh?” He asked with a grin, winking at her before returning to her friends, leaving her speechless. She stood and turned abruptly, crying out when she slammed face first into her open locker door. Looking around, she slammed it shut, praying that no one had noticed. Could she BE any dorkier?

Stepping into the kitchen of his home, JC’s eyes landed on his youngest daughter, giving her a smile.

“You’re going to ruin your dinner,” he warned, seeing the cookies she was indulging on.

“Mumsaihafem,” she mumbled, crumbs falling out of her mouth as she spoke. JC made a face and turned his head from her.

“That’s disgusting Abbi!” Holding up her finger to signal him to give her a second, she downed some milk and cleared her throat.

“Mommy said I could have them,” she told him, giving him a chocolaty smile as she picked up another cookie. JC watched as she shoved it in her mouth, chomping happily on it. Looking around to make sure that his wife was nowhere in sight, he leaned forward and snatched a cookie from his daughter’s plate.

“Well in that case”“

“Att! Put that down right now, mister!” He closed his eyes and groaned when he heard his wife’s voice as he dropped the cookie back to the plate.

“But mommy!” He whined, doing his best impression of Abbi. “You let her have some! I just want one!”

She cocked her eyebrow at him. “I told Abbi she could have TWO cookies,” she said, looking pointedly at her daughter as she smiled sheepishly. Turning to face her, JC wagged his finger at her.

“A-ha! And now the truth comes out!”

“Dad?”

“Yeah Abs?”

“You’re such a dork.”

“Ugh, Jen honey, you need to stop making dinner taste so good,” JC groaned as he dropped down onto the bed beside his wife, rubbing his aching stomach. He’d been complaining for the last hour.

“Aww, does my widdle baby’s belly huwt?” She teased with a laugh, leaning over to nuzzle his neck gently.

“It’s not funny!” He pouted. “I’m going to burst and you’re sitting there having a laugh over it,” he whined, looking over at her pitifully.

“Well you know what I think?”

“What?

“I think first of all… we need to get you out of these pants. You know… give yourself room to breathe,” she suggested, cocking an eyebrow in his direction, causing him to smile at her. She moved to unbutton his pants, grinning when he lifted his hips to let her slide them off of him.

“Oh yeah? Then what?”

“Then… I think you should lay back down here…” she told him, patting the spot beside her. He did just that, giving her a grin.

“Uh huh. And next?”

She ran her hands down his chest and stomach slowly.

“Then, maybe I could rub your belly, you know?” She asked, her hand moving in slow circles.

“Mmm… yeah, that’s nice,” he purred. “What’s next?”

She leaned close to him, her mouth against his ear.

“I think my baby needs some exercise to work all this food off.”

“I love the way you think, Mrs. Chasez.”
