Chapter Eight

Jen let him sulk and pout for almost an hour before she climbed out of bed and made her way out of the room slowly. She headed down the steps and found him on the couch, trying desperately to get comfortable. She covered her mouth to hide the smile that had formed. He was pathetic!

“Hon?”

She knew he’d heard her, even if he didn’t acknowledge it. He was too busy being stubborn. She made her way to the couch and knelt beside him, her hand resting on his chest.

“Jace… stop this and come up to bed. You’re going to kill your back trying to sleep down here,” she reminded him gently, patting his chest lightly.

“Maybe I don’t want to sleep with you,” he grumbled.

“Maybe you’re full of crap,” she challenged. “Get up off this couch and come up to bed now.”

“No.”

Jen rolled her eyes and pushed herself to her feet.

“Fine. Sleep down here. I don’t care,” she told him, shrugging her shoulders as she waddled towards the steps. He was so immature and childish at times. He was driving her completely insane! She rolled her eyes, mumbling to herself as she climbed the stairs, saying a silent prayer to God to have Abbi take after her instead of him!

He was so uncomfortable on that damn couch, but his pride wouldn’t allow him to suck it up and go upstairs. No sir. No wife was of his was going to laugh at his dilemma and then expect him to crawl in bed beside her! No!

Well… maybe just this once. With a sigh, he swallowed his pride and grabbed his pillow, trudging up the stairs slowly. When he pushed the door open, he found his wife sprawled out on her back across the entire bed!

“It’s nice to know I’ve been missed,” he grumbled, going over to sit on the edge of the bed. She couldn’t help but giggle at his defeated demeanor.

“Oh please. I heard you in the hallway, idiot. I knew you were coming,” she said, scooting back over to her side of the bed. She patted his spot and smiled when he laid down, though he didn’t look at her.

“I don’t know what I’ve done wrong, Jen. She’s never talked to me like that before.”

“I told you honey. She’s growing up. I promise, it’s completely normal for teenagers to act that way. Every little thing offends them in some way. She’ll grow out of it.”

“It may be normal, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it,” he mumbled, rolling onto his side to face her. He leaned over to press a soft kiss to her lips, nuzzling her nose. “I’m sorry for getting frustrated with you.”

“I’m sorry for laughing.”

A wry smile found it’s way onto his mouth as he narrowed his eyes playfully at her.

“No you’re not.” Her eyes twinkled as she winked playfully, leaning over to kiss him once more.

“You’re right. I’m not.”

“Julie? Don’t forget your lunch!” Jen called as the sixteen year old stood up from the breakfast table, shoving the chair in. Throwing a look over her shoulder, Julie made a face.

“I’ve got some money. I’m going to buy lunch. Thanks though,” she said, shrugging. Frowning slightly, Jen dropped the brown paper bag to the counter, her hand going to her hip as she watched Julie hurry out of the kitchen. She turned to Abbi.

“Huh. How do you like that?” She asked, bringing one hip up to slap the counter. “Do I need to make you lunch, or have you decided that you’re too ‘cool’ for it as well?”

“No mommy. I need you to make my lunch. I have a very ‘portant business trade to make at lunch and your sandwich is up for grabs,” Abbi explained, taking another bite of her toast. She gave her mom a big grin as she dropped the toast and hurried out of the kitchen to go brush her teeth and grab her books.

Jen shook her head though she couldn’t help but laugh. Never let anyone say that her daughter wasn’t entertaining!

“Where’s your lunch?” Brianna asked, pulling the chair out to sit next to her friend. Even though they’d had their tiff the day before, they were friends. They had been for a long time. No matter what happened between the two of them, they resolved it.

“I didn’t bring nothin’,” Julie said with a shrug, looking up to Brianna.

“Oh.” She reached into her bag and pulled out a banana, throwing it into her friend’s direction. “Mom and dad are going away this weekend. I’m having some friends over. You up for it?”

Letting out a groan, Julie dropped her head back.

“If dad ever lets me out of the house again, sure!”

“What’d you do?”

“I cut third and fourth periods yesterday.”

“No way!”

“Yep. I just left. He was so pissed when he got home.”

Brianna’s eyebrows flew up. She’d never known Julie to do anything to piss her dad off. She’d never known Julie to utter a single curse word. She was pleased.

“You know, there may be hope for you yet!”
