This story hit me so hard I almost got out of bed at midnight to write it.  I cried while writing most of it, as well. It has a hint of "The Notebook" to it, but is mainly inspired by Mary Chapin Carpenter's version of "Grow Old Along With Me."  I often see elderly couples holding hands and wonder how they got to where they are.  I hope you enjoy this.  There is death at the end, warning.
